“Quality construction starts with a deep understanding of the building process and The Thaxter Company's heart and strength lies in our employees. We remain committed to employing our own carpenters and believe this allows us to provide a superior experience and finished product for our customers.”
- John Thaxter, Owner

Our company culture is imbued with respect for the ageless guidelines of woodworking and we use the latest technology to increase and improve our efficiency. Our people have worked in the field and understand the whole process from the ground up. Our organizational strength relieves our customers from the many anxieties that may occur during the building process.

We give our customers a commitment for quality, organization and economy.

JOHN THAXTER: FOUNDER, OWNER AND PRESIDENT

“The thing I like most about my job is shaping a project to an owner's needs through imagination with design and structure, while staying financially responsible to their budget," says John Thaxter. "We also love working on interesting and challenging designs with architects and owners."

John started The Thaxter Company in 1973, as a young man fixing up summer cottages on the islands of Casco Bay. From the start, John's vision was to create a company where quality and responsiveness to the owner's needs took priority. Over the past thirty years, The Thaxter Company has built homes and businesses all over Maine, earning its reputation as one of the most respected builders in the area. John continues to work with owners and architects on projects, particularly when there are unusual budget or design issues involved.

A Mainer several generations back, John grew up in Portland's West End and continues to spend summers on an island in Casco Bay. He has lived with his family in New Gloucester for the past 32 years, and has served on a variety of civic/charitable boards and committees around the Greater Portland area. He has a special interest in helping at-risk youth and in his free time he enjoys sailing, skiing, tennis, golf and traveling.

TREVOR THAXTER: VICE PRESIDENT AND PROJECT MANAGER

"Building a home is a personal experience which is often exciting and stressful all at the same time. Although challenging, it is extremely rewarding to be so closely involved in this process and very satisfying to share in the excitement that our customers experience as their home takes shape.”

Trevor joined The Thaxter Company in 2005, as a Project Manager. Primarily focused on residential projects, Trevor manages the building process and acts as the primary liaison for owners and architects. Recently Trevor has expanded his role in the company to include acting as the V.P. of Operations and brings his previous business and financial experience to this position and looks forward to helping The Thaxter Company grow on its history of success.

Trevor grew up in Portland and is a graduate of Middlebury College. The proud father of two young boys and a girl, he can be found sneaking off to see them participate in their various activities whenever time allows. Trevor also enjoys tennis, fishing, and autumn rounds of golf. Trevor is particularly interested in sustainable living and building and is a member of the Maine Chapter of the Emerging Green Building Committee.

STEPHEN J. KELTONIC: PROJECT MANAGER

"It has been rewarding to be part of this successful company for over 20 years and also maintaining relationships with many of the same sub-contractors and suppliers," says Steve Keltonic. "I'm proud of how our team has responded to the many challenges that our projects have presented over the years."

Steve joined The Thaxter Company in 1985, initially as a carpenter. His role and responsibilities grew with the company, and now, as Project Manager, his role is to develop different projects, and then oversee and guide them through varying stages of completion.

Early on, Steve discovered an aptitude for building, which blossomed into a passion for carpentry (especially post and beam construction) and ultimately became a career in residential and commercial construction. Steve grew up in Connecticut, and left to attend Bates College in Lewiston, Maine; he graduated in 1973 with a B.A. in Psychology, and has been a Mainer ever since. In his free time, Steve enjoys competitive sports, fishing and gardening.
